Case study: Double two-storey extension, Hertfordshire
Phase 1
Building work began on a two-storey extension on the front of the house, which would provide the customer with an entrance lobby on the ground floor and a new family bathroom on the first floor.
The front extension included the construction of a timber mansard roof (a hipped roof with two different angled slopes).
The mansard roof section was clad with weather proof ply wood, giving the structure strength and stability. Felt and batton were added to this section prior to the roof tiles.
Phase 2
The next phase was a two-storey side extension, which would give the customer space for an office and cloakroom on the ground floor and a double bedroom ensuite on the first floor.
Groundwork began by setting out and excavating foundations and then filling with concrete. The cavity walls were built to damp proof course level. Preparations could then begin for the oversite (the base for the internal floor).
The timber work for the first floor was constructed, leaving space for a dorma window in the rear of the extension. The other images show the brick work at the front and side of the extension, with the openings formed for windows and doors.
Next the brick walls and roof tiles were added. Following this, the windows were installed. The entire project was completed in accordance with building regulations and certified by building inspectors throughout.
