Case study: Rear extension, Hertfordshire

This rear extension was designed to a high spec using good quality materials. It added a spacious dining/garden room to an interesting arts and crafts style house, which maximised both natural light and views of the garden.

Steelwork was used to create the structure of the extension. The steel beams were put in place to support the roof, they spanned the top of the openings which would become the doors and windows. The steel column positioned in the corner, was bolted to the concrete foundations and the steel beams above.

A glass fibre roof (GRP) was installed on a fully-insulated warm deck. The roof has a tiered edge marking its perimeter, this interesting detail avoided an oversized fascia.

The glazing has been installed, which includes a triple patio door and a single side door with a window. All the doors, windows, gutters, fascia and soffits have a bespoke powder-coated aluminium finish. This provides a low maintenance and hard wearing exterior.

Inside the extension, new joinery includes a double door connecting the existing house to the new dining/garden room.

Marble-effect porcelain tiles have been laid with steps that have a moulded edge. In place of normal wooden skirting boards, tiled up-stands have been used instead. This makes the floor easier to clean as well as creating a high quality finish.

The addition of a sky lantern floods the area with even more natural light, truly bringing the outside inside. A strip of lights around the edge of the lantern (not pictured), brighten the room in the evening.

Outside, a new patio area was laid using tasteful, reclaimed, York stone slabs. The render has been painted in steel grey, which expertly contrasts with the original pink. The extension and interior is complete and ready to be lived in by the happy customers!
